What is answer engine optimization (AEO) for a local business?

The short answer

Answer engine optimization is making your business the one an AI assistant names when a customer asks it who to call. It is not search engine optimization with a new label: an assistant gives one answer, not ten links, and it picks that answer from what it can read and verify — reviews, services, service area — not from your Google ranking.

01 · Why

Why it matters

The customer stopped comparing links and started taking a recommendation.

The customer now asks for a recommendation, not a list

For twenty years a customer typed a phrase into Google, got ten links and chose. Now a growing share of them ask an assistant a question in plain English — "who should I call about a leaking water heater in Tampa?" — and get one name, occasionally three, with a sentence of reasoning. There is no page two of that conversation. Either the name is yours or it is someone else's.

The numbers behind that shift are not ours. HubSpot, which tracks AI referrals across its own properties, reports that a visitor who arrives from an AI answer converts at five to thirteen times the rate of one who arrives from a search result. That is what a recommendation does that a link cannot: the customer has already been told who to call.

There is no page two of an AI conversation.

Ranking well is no longer the same as being named

The instinct is to assume the assistant reads Google's page one and repeats it. It does not, or not mostly. HubSpot's analysis found that about sixty percent of what AI assistants cite does not come from the top of traditional search rankings. The assistants read directories, review platforms, manufacturer pages, community threads and the business's own site, and they weigh what they can quote with confidence.

So a business can hold the top map-pack position for its trade and still be absent from the answer, because the thing that earned the ranking — reviews on Google — is not on a page the assistant can cite for "best plumber in Tampa". That is the whole gap AEO closes.

02 · What

What it actually is

What AEO actually is, and the one way it differs from SEO that matters for a local business.

AEO, defined

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making a business the answer an AI assistant gives — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot — when someone asks a question the business should be the answer to. It has two halves that are usually collapsed into one.

Branded: the customer already has your name and asks the assistant whether you are any good. Almost every business with reviews does fine here. Unbranded: the customer asks "who should I call?" with no name in the question. This is the half that brings in customers, and for most local businesses the score is zero out of four.

  • Answer-first pages. A question as the heading, a direct one-sentence answer under it, then the detail. The block an assistant lifts is the first one it can quote.

  • Structured, verifiable facts. Services, service area, hours, reviews, in a form a model can check against other sources. Consistency across sources is the new domain authority.

  • Presence where the assistants read. Review platforms and directories, a site the crawlers are allowed to read, and no content locked behind a form.

  • Measurement by citation, not traffic. Ask the assistants the same questions on a schedule and record whether you were named. Everything else is a proxy.

How it differs from SEO, in one sentence

SEO earns a click from a list; AEO earns the name in a single answer. The tactics overlap — a readable page helps both — but the target is different. An SEO campaign can succeed while the assistant never says your name, and it does, routinely, because the reviews that won the ranking live on Google and not on a page the assistant can cite.

How to be the name — the four things an assistant reads, in the order they matter.

In every check we run, the same pattern holds. When an assistant names a business it can point to what it read, and what it read is usually one of four things.

What we build, and what we measure

We take your Google reviews and publish them as an AI-readable review site on a domain you own: every review, your services and service area, an FAQ answered from the reviews, llms.txt, schema, a reviews feed and an MCP manifest. Then we ask the three assistants the eight questions a customer asks before hiring, every month, and report whether you were named, on which platform, and who was named instead.

The free check is the same measurement, run once, before you decide anything. $49.99/month after that. Try it for 14 days. If it isn't what we said, we refund your first month in full and take the site down.

04 · Questions

Common follow-ups

Is AEO the same as GEO (generative engine optimization)?

Same idea, two names. GEO is the academic term; AEO is the one marketers use. Both mean being the answer an AI assistant gives rather than a link in a list.

Do I still need SEO if I do AEO?

Yes, and most of the work overlaps. A readable, structured page helps both. The difference is the target: SEO succeeds when you are ranked, AEO succeeds when you are named. You can have the first without the second, and many businesses do.

Why does Google ranking not carry over to AI answers?

Because the assistants do not mostly read page one. HubSpot found that about 60% of what AI cites does not come from the top of traditional search rankings. The assistants read directories, review platforms and the business's own pages, and quote what they can verify.

How do I know whether it is working?

Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, on a schedule, and record whether you were named. That is the only direct measurement. We run it free once, and monthly for clients, with the full answers stored so every number can be checked.
